6 Log Splitter Maintenance Tips

All log splitters, whether a petrol log splitter or a gas-powered one, can save you a great deal of effort and time if you've been breaking logs for firewood with an axe. Manually splitting logs with an axe may tire you out even if chopping your wood can be hugely satisfying, particularly if you're using wood from your trees. Without breaking a sweat, thanks to wood splitters you can have all the firewood you desire.

Log splitters are fundamentally a mechanical version of a lumberjack. The machine has four components: the oil pump, the valve, the engine and cylinder. The engine provides the energy needed by the machine. The engine is then hooked up to the oil pump. Plumbing linked to the hydraulic oil pump supply a constant stream. The operator uses the valve to propel the cylinder to split a log.

Petrol log splitters are powerful machines, but they still require maintenance in order for them to operate safely and properly. Just like people need exercise to maintain their fitness, wood splitters have to be maintained to stay in top condition. It is important to understand standard maintenance practices. Here are a few tips so you can enjoy your log splitter.

1. Read the manual

One of the simplest but most important things you could do is to read the owner's manual from the start.

The guide should have all the information that you need to know about your log splitter: technical specifications, user instructions, maintenance instructions and safety precautions. It is important to heed warnings and the directions inside the guide to ensure safe and suitable splitter operation.

Not all log splitters are created in exactly the same manner, and you should know the details of your model. Something that could be helpful for a single splitter might not be successful for another.

2. Inspect the hoses

Hydraulics power wood splitters, and you'll find a couple hoses and pipes all over the machine. These are the hoses that lead from the oil pump into the valve, and any fluid necessary to make pressure is provided by them.

The fluid inside the pipes is flowing in an extremely large pressure, up to several tons per square inch. If you think there is a leak in the system, do not attempt to feel the piping around. The high-pressure fluid leaking out of a gap is small enough to pierce your hands.

Use a piece of paper such as cardboard or a playing card to check for leaking hydraulic fluid. Hover the card around the piping until the leak rips through or discolours the card. When you've isolated the place of the flow, replace the hoses.

3. Examine the fluid

Check the liquid reservoir for indicators of water from time to time. With continuous use of this log splitter, water may collect in the fluid with time. The fluid will lessen the log splitter's performance and efficiency. The machine will slowly but steadily hamper in function. Check for milky grey discolouration in the hydraulic fluid. If found, drain and replace the fluid.

4. Grease the ram

Always keep the log splitter's ram generously greased. A well-greased ram is essential in keeping the splitter functional and efficient. Make certain every nook and cranny is greased, as a ram that is dry will quickly encourage rust to form. The seal, if damaged by rust, will lead to disastrous consequences. Sand off any rust formation, clean it and apply grease.

5. Inspect the engine

If your log splitter is powered by a gas engine, keeping it well-maintained is important to its operation. Not just its normal operation, but starting the splitter outright. Make sure that the oil is clean and full, and all valves and the crank shaft are all lubricated.

See whether the component responsible for the proper combustion of your engine, the carburettor, is in good shape. Replace the spark plug and see if electrodes and the plug gap are in great shape. Keeping the engine at its prime is as important as a hydraulic system.
